Star Trek Alum to Marry Partner

Star Trek actor George Takei obtained a marriage license to wed his longtime partner, Tuesday.

According to AP News, George Takei, the actor best known for his role as Mr. Sulu on the original Star Trek, obtained a wedding license Tuesday with his longtime partner, Brad Altman, in West Hollywood.

Tuesday marks the first full day that marriage licenses were issued to homosexual couples in accordance with the California Supreme Court's legalization of gay marriage last month. Takei is the first celebrity to step to the altar as a result of legislation. Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and actress Portia de Rossi are among those celebrities expected to head to the chapel as well.

Takei said, "I think it's a glorious California morning to make history. Congratulations to all of us. May equality live long and prosper."

Takei, 71, and his 54-year-old partner have been together for 21 years. Takei stated that he and Altman will wed on Sept. 14.

In California, marriage ceremonies must be performed within 90 days of the issuance of the license.
