Hindu activists not happy over “Love Guru“
18-Jun-2008
Written by: Marshall Burns

The new Mike Myers film, “Love Guru“ has made some Hindus mad because of what it may represent to the Western world.

Mike Myers upcoming film, “Love Guru,” is upsetting some Hindus because they say the film will hurt the religious sentiments of millions of Hindus worldwide, reported the BBC. There have been more than 5000 people who signed an online petition protesting against the film that is to be released Friday.

Those against the film are saying the West knows so little of Hinduism that a parody such as “Love Guru” even could be misinterpreted by teenagers and give them a skewed view of religion. “They should draw a line when it comes to people’s faith,” Bhavna Shinde of the Sanatan Society in the US told the BBC.

Shinde is upset because of the garb Myers’ character plays in the movie because he wears a sacred Hindu saffron robe and carries holy prayer beads. Though Myers has told the BBC that the “religion” in the film is a “mythical creation – it’s like the force in Star Wars.”

So far only the two-and-a-half minute trailer has been released and caused concern. Two Hindu groups were promised an early screening by Paramount, but never got it, according to the BBC. The activists also wish to make the rating R so that only those over 17 can see it as well as writing protest letter to the Indian Film Censor Board. They say they would be happy with a disclaimer at the beginning of the film to warn people it is not a representation of Hinduism though these views have not been listened to, reported the BBC.
