Lil Wayne’s New Album Debuts at No. 1, Selling over a Million Copies
20-Jun-2008
Written by: Nicole Cassaro

Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter III” becomes the first album to sell over a million copies in its debut week since 2005.

Lil Wayne has done the impossible! Well, okay, the unlikely, at least according to the precedent set for the last three years. Lil Wayne's new album, Tha Carter III, sold over one million albums in its debut week. This million plus debut hasn't been seen since 2005, with 50 Cent's The Massacre.

Although Lil Wayne’s new album was highly anticipated, its numbers exceeded expectations. Impressively, a whopping 423,000 copies flew off the shelves within the first 24 hours of its debut. Even more impressive is the fact that Lil Wayne’s previous best week of selling only amounted to 238,000 copies sold.

Tha Carter III sits in the number one spot on the Nielsen Soundscan/Billboard chart beating out Plies’ Definition of Real, which sold 215,000 copies; a number that would normally be top spot material. In addition, the album is currently holding the record for best selling album of the year. Lil Wayne’s successful first week beats that of Kanye West’s Graduation in 2007, and super-star singers like Madonna and Mariah Carey.

These numbers can’t come as too much of a surprise, as Lil Wayne is considered one of the hardest working rappers of today. His recent success can be heard on any notable remix he has lent himself to throughout the past year. Keep it up, Lil Wayne!
