Ceremony to be broadcast on show at an unannounced date.
Thanks to California's new statute on same-sex marriage, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, 50, has confirmed plans to marry longtime partner, Arrested Development star Portia de Rossi.
According to People Magazine, DeGeneres, one of the entertainment world’s most prominent lesbians, gave de Rossi a pink diamond ring debuted at Friday's Daytime Emmy Awards, at which DeGeneres won Outstanding Talk Show Host. Following up on a May announcement to air the wedding on her show, DeGeneres confirmed: “Yes, we have set a wedding date.”
Though she kept mum about when this date was, elaborate preparations for the “dream wedding” could make it a while coming. “Planning a wedding is very stressful,” said DeGeneres. “It is crazy. My gardener is now invited.”
Also invited are some “incredible” performers for the event, though no hints on who they might be have come out yet.
An activist for gay rights around the country, DeGeneres took the opportunity to discuss the broader implications of the California ruling: “I think someday people will look back on this like women not having the right to vote and segregation and anything else that seems ridiculous like we all don't have the same rights.”
