White House Announces N. Korea to Account for Nuclear Programs
According to a statement released by the White House, North Korea will release a declaration that accounts for its nuclear programs later this week, as part of the nuclear disarmament deal struck in February 2007.
Dana Perino, the spokesperson for the White House, stated that regardless of the declaration there will be no immediate changes to U.S. foreign policy in regard to North Korea.
Perino said, "That is the deadline -- June 26th is the deadline," and added that before taking possible steps such as removing Pyongyang from a U.S. list of terrorism sponsors, Washington would have to study the document.
"We know the North Koreans have been themselves saying that this Thursday would be the date that they submit their declaration."
"We will see if that actually happens -- and if it does, it must be correct and verifiable."
In February 2007, South Korea, the United States, China, Russia, and Japan reached a deal with North Korea that stipulated the abandonment of North Korea's nuclear programs in return for economic and diplomatic aid, a lifting of U.S. sanctions, the establishment of diplomatic relations with Washington and a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War five decades ago.
