THE MEDIA GOT IT WRONG - Winehouse Doesn’t Have Emphysema
24-Jun-2008

The singer has early signs of the disease, but not the disease itself.
Amid the flurry of reports across the Internet (including multiple pieces from this site), no one seemingly received confirmation from Amy Winehouse’s publicist regarding the singer’s condition.
The media ran with the quotes from Winehouse’s father, who said his daughter had early stage emphysema, which was brought on by smoking crack cocaine and cigarettes. But Winehouse’s publicist says that Mitch Winehouse had misspoken “out of his concern for her.”
“She is not diagnosed with full-blown emphysema, but instead has early signs of what could lead to emphysema,” U.S.-based rep. Tracey Miller told the Associated Press.
In an interview with London’s Daily Mail, Mitch said that her smoking (of multiple substances) led to her development of the horrid disease and an irregular heartbeat.
“The doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs, it won’t just ruin her voice, it will kill her,” he said. “There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She has 70 percent lung capacity.”
But in an interview on BBC Radio 1, he changed his previous statement, saying, “Amy really hasn’t got emphysema, there are traces of emphysema. Obviously, if she doesn’t quit smoking, it’s going to get worse, like everyone else . . . with patience her lungs will recover completely.”
Related to this, Winehouse was seen leaving the hospital after a week long stay smoking a cigarette.
She is expected to perform at Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday party in London Friday, and then at the Glastonbury music festival Saturday.
