Anne Hathaway's Ex Faces Jail Time
Earlier this month, 25-year-old Get Smart star Anne Hathaway broke up with on-again-off-again boyfriend, Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri. Good timing for Hathaway, as Follieri has recently been arrested for fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. To top it off, the man is no stranger to scandals. The Associated Press reports that he has previously been accused of lying to investigators, claiming to be the CFO of the Vatican. (Red flag, anyone?) Follieri is due in federal court in Manhattan on Tuesday.
Hathaway is not mentioned by name in the complaint against her 29-year-old ex-boyfriend. However, he is accused of using the stolen funds in question to pay for a trip to the Dominican Republic over New Year's 2005/2006 with his "then girlfriend" and another couple. He also used the funds for his $37,000-a month-apartment rent, orthodontist bills for his father, and medical bills for himself and again, his "then girlfriend," according to papers filed by the U.S. Attorney's Office. In addition, the complaint also specifies that he kept clergy robes in his office to play up the alleged Vatican connections.
Follieri could be facing prison for life. He is charged with the following: six counts of wire fraud (for which each count carries a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars); five counts of money laundering (again, up to 20 years a piece); and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud (maximum penalty of 5 years in prison).
