Bill Gates Steps Down from Daily Operations at Microsoft
Bill Gates officially stepped down from the day-to-day operations of Microsoft on Friday in order to focus on his philanthropic organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Reuters reports.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is funded in part by Gates's vast personal fortune, is the largest charity in the world. With the foundation, Gates will devote his resources to finding new vaccines and to microfinance projects in the developing world.
In a tearful speech given at an employee event at Microsoft's headquarters, Gates said, "There won't be a day in my life when I won't be thinking about Microsoft, the great things that we're doing and wanting to help."
Gates will remain chairman of Microsoft and will continue to work on special technology projects.
As part of Gates's retirement, Steve Ballmer assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft.
