Is Eddie Murphy Retiring?

A return to stand-up comedy may be on the horizon.

The comedic actor who played wisecracking Axel Foley in the '80s and then a wisecracking animated donkey in recent years may be nearing the end of his movie career.

Eddie Murphy, 47, told Extra, Tuesday, that after a long run on the big screen he is ready to head back to the stage.

"I have close to 50 movies and it's like, why am I in the movies?" Murphy told Extra, "I've done that part now. I'll go back to the stage and do stand-up."

Murphy, whose latest film is the upcoming Meet Dave, also revealed that at one point plans were put in motion for Beverly Hills Cop 4, but that he didn’t want to commit to the project because "the movie wasn't ready to be done."

The actor said he also wasn’t satisfied with the Cop 3 script, but that they offered him such a large fee to participate that he agreed to take the role.

The Nutty Professor star also dished on his current love life, telling Extra that he is looking for a woman with "just honesty and some other things."

Murphy married Tracy Edmonds, ex-wife of R&B crooner Babyface, on January 1 of this year, but the two ended their relationship just 15 days later.
