Obama Supports Same-Sex Marriage in California
On Tuesday, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama sent a letter to the Alice B. Toklas Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Democratic Club located in San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
The letter contained a message from the presidential nominee that stated his opposition to a proposed ban on same-sex marriage in California.
This announcement comes about a week after Obama's opponent, Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, showed his support to officials of Protect Marriage, which according to the San Francisco Chronicle is a coalition that is attempting to maintain marriage as an institution between a man and a woman.
Though the state of the economy, increasing energy costs and foreign policy are expected to be the most heated debate topics in the upcoming general election, gay marriage is also likely to be a controversial subject that will be addressed frequently in the coming months.
San Francisco, Arizona and Florida all have proposed same-sex marriage bans expected to appear on the November ballot.
Of the three states, Florida is the one that is considered a crucial swing state for both candidates, and their respective views on gay marriage are expected to have a major impact in the general election.
