Obama Tries to Generate Support in Traditionally Republican States
3-Jul-2008
Written by: Steve Ruback

Democratic nominee to make numerous public appearances this Fourth of July weekend.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is scheduled to make appearances at parades and a picnic in the states of Montana and North Dakota, according to the Associated Press. The significance of this is that these states, which contain merely three electoral votes each in the upcoming general election, have voted for the Republican candidate by a significant margin for approximately four decades.

It appears clear that the Democrat is willing to campaign in areas where, according to a vast array of political experts, he has slim-to-no chance of winning. However, the Democratic nominee seems to be campaigning with the method of the classic phrase, “You never know until you try.”

During a speech given in Colorado yesterday, Obama told those in attendance, “It may have been Woody Allen who said 90 percent of success is showing up. If I didn't show up, I wouldn't get many votes around here. If I did show up, I might get something going.”

According to the Associated Press, the Democratic presidential candidate is trying to gather support in traditional red states by airing television ads and visiting areas that have voted strictly for Republicans in recent years.
