Hitler Gets His Head Ripped Off
6-Jul-2008
Written by: Marshall Burns

A wax figure of Adolf Hitler got his head ripped off by an enraged German at Madame Tussauds, Saturday.

A controversial waxwork figure of the dictator, Adolf Hitler, has had its head ripped off by an enraged man at Berlin’s Madame Tussauds museum on Saturday, reported Reuters.

Just after the museum was opened on Saturday, a 41-year-old German man pushed past two security men guarding the exhibit. “Then he went over to the figure and ripped off the head,” a police spokesman told Reuters. The man did this as a protest to the exhibit and was arrested without resistance, once the police were alerted. He was released, but is still under investigation for assault and damaging property.

The figure of a glum and broken Hitler in a mock bunker just before his death has been criticized as being in bad taste. A preview of the show at Madame Tussauds on Thursday for the media was overshadowed by the fervor over the exhibit.

Critics have said that it was inappropriate to display the dictator who started World War Two and ordered the extermination of Europe’s Jewish population in the same room as pop stars, celebrities and statesmen. The figure looks downwards despondently, behind a large wooden table, with a map of Germany on the wall of the Bunker. In Germany, it is illegal to show Nazi symbols and art glorifying the dictator. Those who visited were also advised by signs not to take photos or pose with the Nazi leader.
