ABBA “Never” to Perform Again
6-Jul-2008
Written by: Marshall Burns

ABBA announced that they plan to “never” perform on stage again.

ABBA is to “never” perform on stage again, according to the BBC. Two of the members, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, told the Sunday Telegraph in Britain that there was “simply no motivation to regroup.”

Ulvaeus told the newspaper, “We would like people to remember us as we were, young, exuberant and full of ambition.” The band was a hit during the 1970s and '80s, later bringing forth the musical, Mamma Mia!, which has recently been adapted for the big screen, according to the BBC.

Andersson said he was surprised that the group’s hit songs have been around for so long. He said of their music to the BBC: “You know what pop music is. It is there for the time it actually happens. We were absolutely dead sure it would be the same for us.”

On the music used in the musical and film version, the BBC reported that Andersson said, “You don’t just give songs away to anyone to do with what they want. It would have been a disaster. We had the power of veto which meant we could have stopped it at any time.”

The band came to their prominence after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 and went on to hit the top of the charts around the world. In the U.K., they were known for “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and “The Winner Takes It All.” The band broke up in 1982 without ever officially announcing their breakup, according to the BBC.
