A dentist in London was recently awarded a singing contract because of his passion for opera.
A $2 million contract was won recently by an opera-loving dentist. Andrew Bain, 35, has been a dentist in the London area for more than 10 years and has recently been signed by the record company, SonyBMG, after chasing the deal for years.
The $2 million contract is a four-album deal. His first debut album is to be released in September. The album will feature operatic versions of pop hits such as the Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now?,” Abba’s “The Winner Takes It All” and Prince’s “Purple Rain.” He told Reuters in a statement, “This is the ultimate dream come true. Not only have I finally got a record deal, but they understand my eclectic taste in music. Who needs yet another version of ‘Nessun Dorma?’”
Senior executive of SonyBMG, Richard Hinkley, spoke of Bain’s modern operatic style as “refreshingly different,” saying it would appeal to pop fans. Bain sang in a church choir from the age of 8 and went on to perform in amateur opera, according to Reuters.
He became a dentist when he was 24 and used his holidays to indulge his passion for singing. He has been trying to just sing for so long and now he has the chance to sing full-time. He told the Daily Telegraph, “I’ll miss the patients, but I won’t miss the drill.”
