DVD Dribble
8-Jul-2008
Written by: Steve Ruback
This edition of the DVD Dribble focuses on intense films that are either already available in stores or are scheduled to be released later this month.
Voice – Unrated
A South Korean ghost story based at an all-girl high school, Voice places an emphasis on drama and suspense rather than on graphic violence and horror. The film is about a young music student who wakes up dead and her ghost proceeds to wander around her old high school, haunting it. Yeong-eon, the ghost who is played by Kim Ok-bin, can communicate only with her best friend, Seon-min, who is played by Seo Ji-hye, which leads to an unexpected turn of events, thanks to her ghost’s evil persona. Voice received rave reviews for its cinematography and musical score after its submission at the San Francisco Korean American Film Festival.
Shotgun Stories
This film is based out of Southeast Arkansas and focuses on an intense blood feud between two different sets of half brothers, following the death of their father. The first set of the father’s sons despise every fiber of his being due to the abuse they sustained as members of his family. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the father’s second set of sons admired and loved him because he treated them much differently than his first set of children, after quitting drinking and becoming religious. Shotgun Stories was the directorial debut of Jeff Nichols, who according to various reviewers did an admirable job of creating a dialogue that captured the viewers’ attention, despite a noticeably low budget. Shotgun Stories is rated PG-13 and was released earlier this month.
American Zombie
This documentary project focuses on what Grace Lee and John Solomon refer to as an undead community in Los Angeles, California. The two, who constantly disagree and conflict with one another throughout the documentary, discover rather early on in the film that the Los Angeles community is being “zombified” by a virus plaguing its residents, that they believe resulted from an extremely gruesome death. American Zombie is an unrated film that is being released today on DVD by the Cinema Libre studio.
Puzzle
A Korean-based crime thriller filled with suspense and confusion, Puzzle is about five men brought together by a mysterious individual in order to perform various schemes. When they return from a successful bank robbery to find their leader burned to death, their situation begins to spiral completely out of control. This thriller utilizes frequent flashbacks in order to provide minimal insight regarding the mystery, until the film’s conclusion when you see all of the pieces of the puzzle come together. Puzzle is an unrated release scheduled to be made available in the United States on July 29, courtesy of CJ Entertainment.
The Last Winter
The Last Winter is a supernatural thriller based at an Alaskan oil company’s outpost that becomes haunted by ghosts of ancient creatures. After one individual is found dead, utter chaos ensues and the oil company’s personnel begin to fall victim to the fears that lead to their gradual loss of sanity. This film relies on its eerie premise and dialogue as opposed to gruesome gore in order to inspire fear in the eyes of the viewer. The Last Winter is an unrated film that is scheduled to be released on DVD July 22, courtesy of IFC Studio.
