Former NFL Star Michael Vick Files for Bankruptcy
Former star quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons, Michael Vick, has filed for bankruptcy protection due to an estimated debt of between $10 million and $50 million, according to the Associated Press. Vick is currently in jail as he is serving a 23-month prison sentence that he received as a result of federal dog-fighting charges.
According to the Associated Press, the former quarterback filed for the bankruptcy papers yesterday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. In a statement that was given in the bankruptcy files, Vick expressed his desire to turn his life around and be reinstated to the NFL upon his release from prison.
The former NFL star stated that he hopes he "can, after the conclusion of the bankruptcy case, rebuild his life on a personal and spiritual level, resurrect his image as a public figure, and resolve matters with the NFL such that he can resume his career."
Vick has filed for bankruptcy largely in part to his indefinite suspension from the National Football League that was handed down by league commissioner Roger Goodell. He also lost sponsorship with all of the companies he was once contracted with, most notably Nike.
