DVD Dribble
10-Jul-2008
Written by: Steve Ruback

This edition of the DVD Dribble features four intense films, three of which are currently available in stores, while the fourth is scheduled for release later this month.

Toxic

An action-packed thriller, sure to keep you on the edge of your seat, Toxic is about an escaped mental patient, upon her escape from the institution, who proceeds to embark on a sadistic murdering spree. Her mind becomes more twisted than ever before when her own father puts a bounty on her head, and what results is a relentless path of destruction and chaos. The escaped mental patient unleashes her immense hostility and rage on various unsuspecting victims, including a stripper, a prostitute, a bartender and a nightclub owner. This unrated Weinstein Company studio release is currently available for purchase wherever DVDs are sold.

10,000 BC

The director of box-office monsters, Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, Roland Emmerich, brings you his latest creation based in a prehistoric era. The film follows the intriguing journey of a young mammoth hunter who is attempting to secure an ideal future for his tribe and rescue the love of his life who has been kidnapped. Though it focuses more on visually gratifying effects and an original dialogue than historical accuracies, 10,000 BC should provide you with nothing less than solid entertainment throughout the duration of the film. Rated PG-13, 10,000 BC was released by Warner Home Video and has been in stores since June 24.

Vantage Point

Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox and 2007 Oscar-winner for best performance by an actor in a leading role, Forest Whitaker, star in Pete Travis’s film about the attempted assassination of the President of the United States. The film creatively shows the various viewpoints and perspectives of the attempted assassination through the eyes of several different witnesses, which allow the viewer to visualize the truth. Quaid and Fox play Secret Service agents who have to protect the President and interestingly enough, Agent Barnes, played by Quaid, took a bullet for the President just six months earlier, which raises concern as to whether or not he is up to the task to potentially do it again. Sony Pictures’ intense film release is rated PG-13 and became available for purchase back on July 1.

21

Jim Sturgess plays the role of Ben Campbell, an MIT student with the ultimate goal of transferring to the Harvard School of Medicine. However, he faces an overwhelming obstacle due to the expenses of such a move and coming from a working-class family, it is one he would not be able to afford unless a drastic measure was made. Campbell discovers an exclusive club taught by Professor Rosa, played by Kevin Spacey, who trains his students in the controversial field of counting cards in the game of blackjack. Does Campbell’s ambition transition into an obsession with greed and corruption? This Sony Pictures studio release is rated PG-13 and will become available for purchase wherever DVDs are sold on July 22.
