Prosecutors Seeking Death Penalty in Nichols's Courthouse Gunman Trial
Prosecutors are reportedly seeking the death penalty in the trial of 36-year-old Brian Nichols, who famously went on a courthouse murdering spree on March 11, 2005, according to CNN.
A total of 54 charges have been pressed against Nichols stemming from the incident, including murder, kidnapping and robbery.
Nichols allegedly confiscated a gun from a sheriff deputy's lockbox and went on to mercilessly shoot and kill the Fulton County Superior Court Judge, a Fulton County Sheriff's Sergeant and a court reporter while he was in the courtroom. A few hours later, it was discovered that he shot and killed an innocent man in his Atlanta home.
The 36-year-old Nichols was originally on trial back on March 11 due to rape charges, according to CNN. This trial, having begun today with a not guilty plea by reason of insanity from Nichols, has been delayed on numerous occasions.
Judge Hilton Fuller voluntarily removed himself from being involved in the case in October of 2007 after he was quoted in an interview as saying, "Everyone in the world knows he did it."
