Spike Lee to Film Broadway Musical
11-Jul-2008
Written by: Justin Zaremba

Director Spike Lee will film several performances of the critically acclaimed musical, “Passing Strange.”

Spike Lee will make a film of the Broadway musical, Passing Strange, the BBC reports.

Lee, director of films such as Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, will film the performance on July 19 with an audience, along with two more performances without audiences.

Passing Strange, a musical about a young man’s journey through sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll, officially ends its run in New York on July 20. Passing Strange opened to rave reviews and critical acclaim at the Belasco Theatre in February.

The show received seven Tony Award nominations. Mark Stewart, the cocreator and star, won a prize for its storylines.

Despite the good reviews, Passing Strange will close because it has failed to attract the high audience numbers required to stay open.
