Bernie Mac Not Loved at Obama Rally
Bernie Mac's show at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Chicago didn't fly so well on Friday night as he appeared for a fund-raiser for Barack Obama. In one of his jokes he said, "My little nephew came to me and he said, 'Uncle, what's the different between a hypothetical question and a realistic question?' I said, 'I don't know,' but I said, 'Go upstairs and ask your mother if she'd make love to the mailman for $50,000,'" reported the Associated Press.
This joke received an angry response from at least one person in the audience who said it was offensive to women. "It's not funny. Let's get Barack on," shouted a man from the crowd, according to AP. Each person in the crowd had paid $2,300 to support the Illinois senator.
Fifteen minutes later, when Obama came on stage, he tried to smooth things over by making a joke of his own. The incident has the senator's campaign criticizing Mac for his choice of material, reported AP. Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement afterwards, "Sen. Obama told Bernie Mac that he doesn't condone these statements and believes what was said was inappropriate."
This was Obama's first celebrity event of the evening. At the Lincoln Park nightclub, Obama talked to music fans who had paid up to $500 per person to watch a performance by Jeff Tweedy and two other band members from Wilco, reported the Associated Press.
