Michael Caine Supports an Oscar Nomination for Heath Ledger

The British actor believes that his Dark Knight costar gave an Oscar-worthy performance.

Plenty of people believe enough that the late Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight deserves an Oscar nod.

Previous posthumous nominations include James Dean, for East of Eden and Giant. The only actor to ever win a posthumous Oscar is Peter Finch, in Network. Will Heath Ledger join these distinguished stars?

According to People, Dark Knight costar, Michael Caine, who plays the butler, Alfred Pennyworth, said that Ledger definitely deserves it.

"I think Heath will surely get a posthumous nomination for an Academy Award," Michael Caine said Friday at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, where the legendary actor was honored in a hand and footprint ceremony.

The film’s director, Christopher Nolan, agrees with Caine that Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker needs to be acknowledged with a nomination. "[For] those who knew him and those who had the privilege of working with him, it's been pretty amazing, the disparity between the person he was and the monster that he created for us," he said at a press day in June.

"To see that being created from this very gentle person is a real testament to his skill as an actor."

"He was incredible [and] he was amazing,” said Caine, 75. "And I think he will get it. It's an incredible performance, just wonderful."

The Dark Knight also stars other Hollywood A-list actors, such as Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman. It releases into theaters on July 18, and features a special tribute to Heath Ledger during the movie’s closing credits.
