Insurgents Fail to Take U.S. Military Observation Base on Sunday

U.S. troops fight off insurgents.

Despite intense efforts from insurgents attempting to overrun a U.S. military observation base in Afghanistan's Kunar Province, they failed to take control of the base thanks to the courageous opposition they faced from the U.S. soldiers, according to CNN.

Nine U.S. soldiers were killed in the attack and fifteen were wounded by the approximately two hundred insurgents that were involved in the attack.

CNN is reporting that Sunday's battle resulted in the highest fatality total of U.S. soldiers during an attack in Afghanistan in approximately three years.

Mark Laity, a spokesman for NATO, described the actions of the troops involved in the passionate defense of their base as heroic.

In explaining the series of events from yesterday's insurgent attack, Laity said, "They attempted to break into that base. They did make some penetration. But overall they were repelled and they took very heavy casualties themselves."

According to CNN, the number of U.S. soldier fatalities has tragically reached a total of 470 since the beginning of coalition operations in Afghanistan.
