Dolly Parton Pens Songs for “9 to 5” Musical

Singer Dolly Parton has written songs for a Broadway musical based on the 1980 film, “9 to 5.”

Country singer Dolly Parton has written songs for a Broadway musical based on the 1980 film, 9 to 5, in which she starred, according to the BBC.

In the original film, Parton, who was nominated for an Oscar for writing the title song, starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

The story revolves around three colleagues that attempt to turn the tables on their sexist, lying boss.

The musical will include Parton’s original score as well as 20 new songs.

First playing in Los Angeles this September, 9 to 5 will open on Broadway on April 23, 2009.

The West Wing’s” Allison Janney and Stephanie J. Block will play the roles originally filled by Tomlin and Fonda, respectively.

Megan Hilty will appear in Parton’s role as the executive secretary. Marc Kudisch will play the antagonistic boss.

Parton said that working on the musical version of 9 to 5 was “the most fun I've ever had as a songwriter.”

“When they asked me if I would write the music, I said I would try,” the 62-year-old singer added.

“I don't know that much about Broadway. It's a little bit out of my league. So I went home and I prayed about it.”

For Parton, that proved to be all she needed.

“I got into it and I really acted out all the parts,” she said.

The production team began its praise, but Parton was more modest about the musical.

“We won't know until the next morning after we open,” she exclaimed.
