Barenaked Ladies Cancel Disney Show as Frontman Faces Cocaine Charges

Barenaked Ladies cancel their performance at an upcoming Disney charity show as frontman Steven Page faces cocaine charges.

Barenaked Ladies frontman Steven Page was arrested in New York last Friday for possession of cocaine, reported Reuters. The band, having just released Snacktime, its first children’s album, has consequently canceled its performance at an upcoming Disney charity show.

In a statement posted on the BNL Web site on Thursday, the band left a message for its fans: “Many of you have probably read or heard press accounts about Steven Page's recent arrest in New York State. Steven has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and the validity of the charges against Steven will be strongly contested.”

Page, 38, was arrested last Friday while visiting a friend in Fayetteville, upstate New York. He has been charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, reported the Associated Press. The felony could result in a maximum penalty of as much as 15 years in jail. Page is due back in court in late August.

In the band’s latest statement, posted on their Web site on Friday, Barenaked Ladies manager Terry McBride broke the news about the Disney show. “Members of the band completely support Steven Page, but we don’t want to put Disney in an awkward position before issues involving Steven’s arrest are resolved.” Meanwhile, discussion boards on the band’s Web site are overflowing as Barenaked Ladies fans continue to comment on the matter.

“While this is happening, it's business as usual for Barenaked Ladies. We will continue to perform and look forward to heading into the studio later this year to record a new album. We want to thank our loyal fans for their continued support during this difficult time,” Thursday’s statement read.
