Dealing with Migraines
21-Jul-2008

I’ve dealt with migraines since I was young.
It seems I had migraines before I knew I had migraines. I would go to bed and have to sleep all day. I have learned over the years that menstrual cycles, MSG in food, cheese, excitement, stress, and yes, even light can set them off. Once I got to menopause, I thought all my years of severe migraines were behind me. Now I am struggling with blinding migraines. I learned that one of my medications had been triggering them for some time and was taken off that med and moved to another. I was on the original med for three years before we were able to pinpoint that I had built up an allergic reaction to it.
Yet now, I never know when a blinding migraine will hit. A doctor told me it is a chemical problem in the brain that triggers them. I have found bright lights and lack of sleep can trigger them quickly.
When I was first married, my doctor told me to tough them out and they would lessen in time. Let me tell you, that did not happen. I would get so sick I would pray to vomit to get over them. One has to sleep them off to get through them, but when your head hurts so bad you cannot turn it at all, it is hard to sleep.
So when I went from severe ones to blinding ones, sleep did help. Only problem is, if you are driving and get hit with a blinding migraine, you have to pull off the road quickly and take some medicine or the zigzags rob you of your eyesight. These I do sleep off.
Today has been one of those days I have suffered. Every time I think I am through it, it is back. I think maybe the heat is part of it but I'm not sure.
My advice though is to get the meds to carry with you. Hoping to tough it out and that they will get lighter in time just does not work. I know from experience.
I never leave my migraine meds behind.
But I sure do wish the industry that makes them would not seal them in such a way that when you are in the midst of a migraine, you cannot open them. I have to cut corners and put them in a container so they will easily be ready.
