William Petersen: Good-Bye “CSI”
21-Jul-2008
Written by: Dean Stattmann

“CSI’s” William Petersen leaves the show, but not entirely.

Fans of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation will be saying farewell to William Petersen soon as he prepares to leave the show.

Petersen, who played forensic entomologist Gil Grissom, will leave CSI as an original cast member this coming season, reported the Associated Press.

We saw Petersen leave the show once already in 2005, when he lent his talents to the theater, however, this time he will not be back in his usual role. Executive producers Carol Mendelsohn and Naren Shankar said Tuesday that Petersen would stay on as an executive producer, even making the odd guest appearance every now and then.

This kind of thing is not uncommon in television, especially when it’s a show with a lengthy history like CSI.

“Shows lucky enough to go this long inevitably have to deal with this kind of change,” Shankar told the Associated Press. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation debuted in 2000.

Meanwhile, Petersen seems confident about his decision. “I'm in a great place in terms of knowing that I'll be more free to make choices. And I'm responsible enough to not do it in a way that would hurt [the show],” Petersen told Entertainment Weekly in a recent exclusive interview. “I want it to work for the writers, I want it to work for the cast, and, most importantly, I want it to work for the audience.”

While this news may have many CSI fans worried, Mendelsohn and Shankar have vowed that cast changes will not change CSI, reported the Associated Press.

“What makes shows go off the rails is they forget who they are. We're a crime-mystery-forensics drama,” Shankar said.

Well, at least that’s still the same.
