Darren Aronofsky to Remake "RoboCop"

Darren Aronofsky, director of "Requiem for a Dream" and "The Fountain," will remake "RoboCop" for MGM.

According to Variety, Darren Aronofsky is set to remake RoboCop for MGM for a fast-tracked release in 2010. David Self, the screenwriter for Road to Perdition, will write the new screenplay.

Aronofsky, best known for Requiem for a Dream and Pi, has reportedly been interested in the project for some time, but the film's plot is being kept under wraps. Insiders say that it is likely that the film will move in a more noir direction versus that of the action sci-fi vigilantism of the original film.

RoboCop will become the first tentpole for MGM since Mary Parent assumed leadership of the studio in March.

Mike Medavoy, of Phoenix Pictures, will produce the remake with Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer, and David Thwaites. Medavoy originally helped bring the first RoboCop to the screen for Orion 21 years ago.

RoboCop follows a fatally wounded cop who is transformed into a cyborg in order to put down crime in futuristic Detroit, Michigan. Peter Weller played the title character in the original. The original film spawned two sequels, two comic book adaptations, and four television series.

Currently, Aronofsky is at work on The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood.
