The Dark Knight Shatters $300 Million Record
Just 10 days after its North America release, The Dark Knight has surpassed the $300 million mark faster than any other release to date, reported BBC News.
The record had previously been held by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which took 16 days to claim the title in 2006.
The Dark Knight is the latest release in the Batman series and amongst its star-studded cast are Christian Bale, who plays the caped crusader, and the late Heath Ledger, who is blowing away audiences worldwide with his psychologically twisted portrayal of the Joker.
The movie has received enormous media attention and is without doubt the most talked-about film of the season, partly due to Ledger's untimely passing.
The Dark Knight also set a new record for takings from an opening weekend and has since become the second-highest earning film in North America. The number one spot, currently occupied by Robert Downey, Jr.'s excellent portrayal of Iron Man, is not out of The Dark Knight's reach, however. The movie "seems to be unstoppable," Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office tracking company Media by Numbers, told BBC News.
Dergarabedian even entertained the idea of the Batman flick besting Titanic's record of $600 million, saying that the notion was "not all that far-fetched any more."
