Mummy Beats Batman Overseas
The Dark Knight may be holding its own in the United States, but The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor has gone via the foreign market to claim its number one spot.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the new Mummy film replaced The Dark Knight, the latest movie in the Batman series, in the foreign box office this weekend.
The movie took the top spot in 26 of its 28 markets, ranging from Mexico to Thailand, thus breathing new life into the franchise. According to Universal, the third installment in the Mummy saga pulled in $102 million worldwide this weekend, with The Mummy Returns having made $21.5 million, and the original Mummy trailing with a mere $16.7 million.
The top international market for the film was South Korea, which brought in $13.3 million. Russia was a close second with $12.7 million, and it was followed by Spain, Mexico and Brazil, which brought in a total of around $15 million, reported THR.
Directed by Rob Cohen, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor stars Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello and Michelle Yeoh. In the film, the mummy of an ancient cursed emperor is excavated, setting the stage for a gripping adventure in the same vein as Indiana Jones.
