Attack in China Kills 16 Policemen, Causes Concern for Olympics
According to the Associated Press, two attackers, whose identities have not been released, killed sixteen police officers after driving a dump truck into a group of jogging policemen, igniting and then tossing homemade explosives at them.
Fourteen of the officers died instantaneously while two others passed away while being transported to the hospital and more than sixteen other officers were wounded as a result of the attacks.
With the 2008 Summer Olympic Games scheduled to begin this Friday, security concerns are at an all-time high due to endless speculation that various militants are planning on disrupting and creating subversions at the historical event.
Chinese authorities are investigating if there is a correlation between the horrific attack and the upcoming Olympic Games.
Beijing's Olympic organizing committee spokesman, Sun Weide, looked to calm worldwide concerns about potential attacks on athletes representing each country at the games.
Weide provided a statement in response to the tragic and seemingly unprovoked attacks, saying, "We believe that we are prepared to deal with any kind of security threat and we are confident and capable of hosting a peaceful and safe Games."
