China increases security for Olympics

Monday's attack on policemen by two bombers forces China to beef-up security for the Olympic games

Monday's attack on police officers by two men who slammed into a group of jogging policemen with a dump truck before they tossed homemade explosives at them, which resulted in the death of 16 officers and injuries to 16 others, has resulted in an increase in security by China prior to the Olympic games on Friday.

China has increased police presence after the attacks occurred, specifically on roadway checkpoints as well as at schools, hospitals and prominent government buildings.

In a statement given to The Guardian, Chinese security official Sun Weide said, "We are prepared to deal with any kind of security threat and we are confident we will have a safe and peaceful Olympic Games."

Yesterday's attack occurred in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which is where a Sunni Muslim ethnic minority resides and that fact alone has raised concern amongst those in the area as well from various countries across the world who will be participating in the Olympic Games.

According to CNN, China stated last month that they had cracked five separate terrorist groups in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region who originally had the intention of sabotaging the Olympics.
