Richard Dreyfuss Sues Father, Uncle Over Loan
9-Aug-2008
Written by: Justin Zaremba

Richard Dreyfuss, 60, is suing his father and uncle over a loan he claims they failed to repay.

Richard Dreyfuss, the actor who appeared in such films as Jaws and Mr. Holland’s Opus, is suing his father and uncle over a 24-year-old loan he claims was never repaid, BBC News reports.

Dreyfuss claims that he provided his relatives $870,000 in 1984 when they were in possession of an interest in a Los Angeles office building.

The 60-year-old actor claims in court paper filed on Friday that the loan is still outstanding and that his uncle, Gilbert, has refused to turn over financial records.

In the suit, Dreyfuss is seeking repayment of the loan with interest, as well as punitive damages.

In the mid-1970s, Dreyfuss became a star through his performance in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind and his role in The Goodbye Girl, which won Dreyfuss an Academy Award for best actor in 1978.

A publicized drug problem forced Dreyfuss to reestablish his career in the 1980s with performances in Stand by Me and Down and Out in Beverly Hills.

In 2004, Dreyfuss stated that he was no longer interested in pursuing a career in film; however, he has since appeared in a remake of The Poseidon Adventure and will appear in a new romantic comedy, My Life In Ruins.
