Isaac Hayes Passes
Singer Isaac Hayes, who is best known for writing and performing the theme from the film, Shaft, has died in Memphis, Tennessee, CNN reports.
Steve Schular, a spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, said that relatives discovered an unconscious Hayes, 65, in his home next to a still-running treadmill.
Paramedics tried to revive Hayes and took him to a hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m.
The sheriff's department stated that foul play is not suspected.
Hayes was a longtime collaborator of Stax Records in Memphis. He wrote, arranged, and played songs for the studio's backup band and crafted songs for artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave in the 1960s.
Hayes released his first solo album in 1967.
The theme from Shaft won an Academy Award in 1971 for best original theme song. The song and the movie score won Grammy awards for best movie theme and original score.
In 2002, Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
