Woman Accused of Stalking John Cusack Fit to Stand Trial
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has ruled that a woman arrested on charges of stalking actor John Cusack is mentally competent to stand trial, the BBC reports.
Emily Leatherman, 33, was arrested in March near Cusack's Malibu home and later charged with stalking the actor.
The case was put on hold pending an evaluation while Leatherman was evaluated by a court-appointed psychiatrist.
After reviewing the psychiatrist's reports, the judge found Leatherman competent and ordered her to stand trial on September 9.
In addition to stalking charges, Leatherman was charged with counts of petty theft and disobeying a restraining order, which Cusack obtained against her in 2006.
Leatherman has been in custody since her arrest and faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
Judge Susan Speer based her ruling on the psychiatrist's evaluation that Leatherman was delusional and paranoid, but competent to stand trial.
Speer issued several warnings to Leatherman, who sobbed in court and repeatedly talked over the judge.
Cusack is best known for films including 1408, High Fidelity, and Con Air.
