Britney Spears Snags Three Nominations of the Video Music Awards

The queen of pop gets more shots at VMA glory.
No matter what happens, Britney Spears will always be in. For this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, this reigning pop icon has managed to snag three nominations for her video of “Piece of Me.” One of the nominations is actually for the lucrative top spot of Video of the Year, despite last year’s lip-synching fiasco of a comeback performance.
Her “Gimme More” performance was sloppy in singing and choreography. It meant to serve for a comeback performance, after the artist’s bad year that includes a failed child custody battle and a stint in rehab, New York Daily News wrote.
“Britney Spears made last year's MTV Video Music Awards a memorable one with her performance of ‘Gimme More’—albeit in ways she may not have intended,” MTV wrote on its Web site yesterday. “But on Sept. 7, Spears will get a chance at VMA glory.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, it’s unclear whether Spears will perform this year, but she is supposedly in talks with MTV. The only confirmed performers are the Jonas Brothers, Kid Rock, and Lil Wayne. However, to promote the awards, Spears has shown her sense of humor by doing commercial stints with host Russell Brand: “A trim and dolled up Spears mindlessly banters with host Russell Brand as a 9,000-pound pachyderm walks behind them—signaling that last year's lousy act is the elephant in the room,” the Daily News wrote.
This year’s nominations give Spears a total of 16 over her career, all of which she lost to another performer. One of those was her only other Video of the Year bid in 2004 for “Toxic,” which she lost to Outkast’s “Hey Ya.”
Other contenders for Video of the Year are Chris Brown for “Forever,” the Jonas Brothers for “Burnin’ Up,” the Pussycat Dolls for “When I Grow Up,” and the Ting Tings for “Shut Up and Let Me Go.”
The awards will telecast live from the Paramount Pictures Studios lot on September 7, 2008.
