America Ferrera: Entertainer of the Year

The Ugly Betty star was honored at the 2008 ALMA Awards.
It was a good night for Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants star America Ferrera last night, when she was named Chevy Entertainer of the Year for her work on Television’s Ugly Betty, reported the Hollywood Reporter.
The 2008 American Latino Media Arts Awards were filmed Sunday night at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, where Latino performers were honored for their positive contributions to the entertainment industry.
The actress, who also stars in this summer’s sequel to The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, took home an ALMA for her title role in Ugly Betty. In the show, she plays Betty Suarez, a smart and highly ambitious young woman, determined to make it in the publishing industry, despite her homely appearance.
The two-hour awards show honored several other familiar faces and talents. According to the Hollywood Reporter, entertainer Linda Rondstadt won a Trailblazer Award, Shakira received the Humanitarian Award and comedian George Lopez took home the Outstanding Comedy Special Award for HBO’s “George Lopez: America’s Mexican.” Special Achievement awards were also doled out to director Kenny Ortega and fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez.
The ALMA Awards, presented by the National Council of La Raza, are set to air September 12 on ABC.
