Applegate Has Double Mastectomy
Actress Christina Applegate has received a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer, the BBC reports.
Applegate told Good Morning America that following the procedure she was "100 percent clear and clean."
She added, "It did not spread. They got everything out, so I'm definitely not going to die from breast cancer."
Applegate decided to have surgery after testing positive for the BRCA1 breast cancer gene.
Last month, Applegate, who is best known for her role on Married with Children, was diagnosed with cancer in one breast after a doctor-ordered an MRI scan.
Applegate revealed she was "so mad" when she received the diagnosis.
She said, "I was just shaking and then also immediately, I had to go into 'take care of business' mode."
"After looking at all the treatment plans that were possibilities for me, the only one that seemed the most logical and the one that was going to work for me was to have a bilateral mastectomy."
Applegate stated that she had the surgery three weeks ago and will have reconstructive surgery over the coming months.
She joked, "I'm going to have the best boobs in the nursing home. I'm going to be the envy of all the ladies around the bridge table."
On September 5, Applegate is scheduled to appear on a one-hour TV special, called "Stand Up to Cancer," to be aired on ABC, CBS, and NBC.
