The band performs just hours after learning about the death of member LeRoi Moore.
The latest Dave Matthews Band concert in Los Angeles was an emotional one, as only a few hours before, the band learned that founding member and saxophonist LeRoi Moore had died, the United Press International reports.
The 46-year-old saxophone player died on Tuesday following complications from an all-terrain vehicle accident that occurred earlier this summer in June.
Concert-goers claimed that lead singer, Dave Matthews, was clearly upset at the band’s concert in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. According to Rolling Stone, fans thought that Matthews viewed the performance as a “healing” set.
“When I walked in, I was surprised to see Dave there because they had, literally, four hours to prepare, and he came out and you could see people were definitely sad,” Sebastian Jonqua, a fan who attended the concert, told the magazine.
Another audience member, Bobbie Celaya, revealed that Matthews “was like, ‘We have some sad news. . . . We learned today . . . LeRoi today gave his ghost up,’ and right then and there, I started bawling.”
During the band’s performance, Matthews reportedly told the story of how he first met Moore. The two first became friends at a Virginia bar where Moore was performing a show. Matthews claims to have fallen in love with the saxophonist’s sound after he played “the most beautiful version of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ that I ever heard in my whole life.”
