Aussies Reluctant to Grant Snoop Visa
26-Aug-2008
Written by: Alexandra Perich

After being banned from the country last year due to “character issues,” gangsta rapper Snoop Dogg was granted a visa Tuesday to enter Australia for his upcoming tour in October with rapper Ice Cube, according to E! Online. However, this decision caused a stir among the Aussies.

"Snoop Dogg trades in toxic messages of menace, violence, misogyny and lawlessness," Angela Conway, of the Australian Family Association, told the Herald Sun newspaper, the Washington Post reported.

According to the Washington Post, his criminal record includes charges for several types of drugs and possession of firearms since 1990, and a 1993 acquittal for murder; not to mention he has also been denied entry to Britain.

Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr., was refused permission to even apply for an Australian visa in 2007 because of his criminal record and a previously overstayed visa infraction, which, as a result, cancelled his plans to co-host the MTV Australia Video Music Awards, according to the Washington Post.

This first denial was under the jurisdiction of Australia's former conservative government, which lost power last year to the centre-left Labor government of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, according to the Washington Post. But with a new government in power came a fresh assessment of Snoop’s request to enter into the country.

E! Online reports that an unidentified official said, "As a result of public concern and interest, the department has decided that in fact we will be undertaking a more thorough assessment of Mr. Broadus's character."

Upon arrival in Australia, Snoop Dogg will meet with immigration agents who will lay out strict behavioral guidelines and advise him to be on his best behavior and follow certain rules if he wants to remain there, according to E! Online.

No comments have been made from Snoop Dogg or any of his reps.
