Polar Music Prize for Pink Floyd
27-Aug-2008
Written by: Dean Stattmann

The Polar Music Prize ceremony took place in Stockholm, Sweden.

Nick Mason and Roger Waters, two members of British rock group Pink Floyd, were honored in Sweden, where they received the prestigious Polar Music Prize.

The award, presented by King Carl XVI Gustaf, was awarded to the musicians for their “monumental contribution to popular music,” reported BBC News.

The Polar Music Prize, which is split between pop and classical musicians, was also awarded to American soprano Renee Fleming “in recognition of her sublime unparalleled voice and unique stylistic versatility.”

“Connoisseurs and the general public alike have been dazzled by the beauty of her soft and natural voice,” the judges explained.

Winners of the prize were each awarded one million kronor ($157,000) from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, and when asked about what they would do with their newly acquired cash, the Pink Floyd members said that it would be divided amongst the band’s members who would subsequently donate their shares to charities of their choice, reported Billboard.

Waters, 64, thanked his mother for helping him win the award. “If there is any humanity and empathy in my work, which I think there is, I would rather owe it to her,” he said.

Previous Polar Music Prize winners include Led Zeppelin, B. B. King, Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder.
