Jr. is set to play gifted doctor Ben Carson.

Cuba Gooding, Jr., known for Jerry Maguire and American Gangster, is going to play a neurologist, reports Reuters.

The movie is called Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, about a real life doctor who rose up to become director of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins University Hospital through tremendous odds.

The movie comes from the actual memoir written by Carson and Cecil Murphey, and will tell of a the doctor’s early life growing up in a difficult neighborhood of Detroit after his father left the family.

It will then chronicle his life and the encouragement Carson received from his mother to get through school against the obstacles of peer pressure and even prejudice against him.

In June, Carson’s accomplishments led him to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, bestowed on him by President Bush himself.

The movie is a TNT original that will air under the Johnson and Johnson Spotlight segment in 2009. It is directed by Thomas Carter, the director of Coach Carter, and is written by John Pielmeier.
