OMG 90210 Is Back!
28-Aug-2008
Written by: Jessica McCumber

Beverly Hills, 90210 is back, bringing with it the old, but changing it up for the new generation.

According to Time.com, 18 years after the original pilot aired, the show, Beverly Hills, 90210, will be coming back under its new name, 90210, to the CW on September 2.

Although fans of the original show may be excited about a comeback, it comes with a warning. “Fans of the original show will be taken aback at first,” Jennie Garth, aka Kelly Taylor, warns.

Garth will also be returning to West Beverly High as a guidance counselor. Unlike her past, though, Taylor is now tamer and a single mom.

The warning comes because after so many years, there are bound to be some changes in the works.

One difference, for example, is seen in the parents. In the old show, the Walshes had no conflict, were not a centralized part of the plot and had no dynamic. They didn’t really add anything. Reportedly, writer-producers Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah say that the parents of the new 90210 will be just as much a part of the show as their children, and more updated and true to life.

Sachs says, “A lot of parents now want to be the cool parents, as opposed to just the disciplinarian. And sometimes that backfires. In some ways we’re giant teenagers ourselves.”

Examples of this will be seen in Rob Estes's character (dad Wilson), who is the school’s principal, and in Kelly, who chooses a teacher for a love interest.

The show is also reportedly more ethnically diverse with characters like Dixon, who is both adopted and African-American, and Navid, an Iranian-American student played by Michael Steger. Both are regular characters.

Technological updates will be crucial too, as one character, Erin Silver (Jessica Stroup), half-sister of Taylor and David Silver, is quite popular on YouTube for her video diary.

Old fans need not worry though, as amongst the things to remain the same is a story line with which they will be familiar.

The show apparently starts with the Wilsons, from Kansas, moving to Beverly Hills to take care of an alcoholic grandmother, and their children, Annie (Shenae Grimes) and Dixon (Tristan Wilds), trying to fit in among the elite teens at West Beverly.

Also, the Peach Pit is still a popular hangout with counterman Nat (Joe E. Tata), and its only change being in what it serves: trendy lattes.

It is even said that Shannen Doherty will have a guest spot as Brenda, who will be directing the school's play.

The point was to be multigenerational, accommodating both old and new fans. CW president Dawn Ostroff says, “We wanted the show to be accessible for viewers who are fans of the original show or for a parent to sit down and watch the show with their kids.”
