NFL Player Ignores Wishes of Four Doctors; Will Play
28-Aug-2008
Written by: E. Van Dril
Shawne Merriman never graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in medicine, though one might think he did with the decision he’s made.
Shawne Merriman, who plays outside linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, will play football despite tearing two ligaments in his left knee. Which, considering the stereotype about football players (tough, with the ability to play through the pain, etc.) might seem reasonable. But Merriman is ignoring the advice of four doctors who have told him to have reconstructive knee surgery (something that the Chargers' All-Pro admits that he will need at least when the season's over) to start the season.
Merriman tore the two ligaments in his knee in a game against Tennessee last December, and has spent the better part of the last week talking to doctors about the knee.
But through this all, one thing's clear. Merriman is a gamer who just wants to play football.
"To be as simple as possible, I just want to play football," Merriman said. "That's what it comes down to. I know what's on the table, I know what's on the line. I put a lot of work in this and I want to play."
