Akon to Stand Trial
3-Sep-2008
Written by: Marissa Willman

The singer allegedly threw a 15-year-old concertgoer off the stage in June of 2007 and now faces charges of harassment and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Singer Akon will stand trial on December 1, on charges of harassment and endangering the welfare of a minor after allegedly throwing a 15-year-old concert attendee off the stage at a show, according to RecordOnline.com.

A judge ruled Wednesday that Akon, whose real name is Aliaune Damala Thiam, will stand trial for the alleged occurrence at last year’s KFest concert on June 3, 2007. He allegedly threw 15-year-old Harriman, New York resident Anthony Smith from the stage.

If convicted, Akon could face up to 1 year and 15 days in jail.

Smith, now 16, appeared in court Wednesday but declined to comment. His father said, “We didn’t expect this to happen. We’ll see.”

Akon’s attorneys released a statement, saying, “We are pleased that judge Epstein adjourned the case to a date certain for either a trial or a negotiated resolution. Akon looks forward to putting this incident behind him, and in the meantime he will continue to meet every requirement set forth by the Court.”

Akon’s hits include “The Sweet Escape,” a duet with Gwen Stefani, “I Wanna Love You,” with Snoop Dogg, and “Smack That” with Eminem. He is featured on Kardinal Offishal’s new single, “Dangerous,” which hits stores Tuesday.
