Guillermo Del Toro Busy Until 2017
7-Sep-2008
Written by: E. Van Dril
Del Toro recently directed the critically-acclaimed Hellboy 2 sequel, and will soon direct Hobbit.
It's often rare for a person in the movie business to know what they will be doing two years down the road. But not for Guillermo Del Toro.
The director is now booked through 2017, and depending on whether there are any delays in his projects, it could be well beyond that.
Del Toro signed a three-year first-look deal with Universal in June 2007. He then committed to four high-profile directing projects.
These films include remakes of Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and a film based on Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five.
The fourth film is based on an adaptation of Drood, which is a novel written by Dan Simmons. Drood is currently being published, and is to be released in February 2009 by Little, Brown. Universal was so confident in the quality of the book, and the directing talents of Del Toro, that they have already bought the book and now have tapped Del Toro to direct.
And finally, as it has been well documented across the Internet, Del Toro's next film is The Hobbit, for which he is committed over the next five years. He has already begun writing the screenplay with Fran Walsh, Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens. He is also taking trips to New Zealand every three weeks in order to scout locations.
Right now, according to reports, it appears that Drood will be his first project after The Hobbit, but that's still up in the air.
What's not up in the air, however, is that Del Toro will likely be the busiest director over the next nine-plus years, which is a good thing for fans because his movies are of high quality.
