Britney Opens and Wins at VMAs
8-Sep-2008
Written by: Marissa Willman
The pop star has been nominated 16 times over the years but brings home her first Moonman tonight.
Britney Spears lived up to low expectations at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, showing up to the ceremony, delivering her lines and taking home three Moonman awards, to boot.
Her second shot at a comeback went off without a hitch. The singer delivered a whopping four lines to open the show as she nervously clutched the microphone, telling the audience, “I’m here to celebrate a very important birthday. This is the 25th Video Music Awards – and it starts right now.”
Spears’s opening was hardly the fun or surprising guest appearance that her manager, Larry Rudolph, or MTV promised the star would deliver.
After nearly a decade of nominations, Spears won her first VMA Moonman for Best Female Video for “Piece of Me.” By the end of the night, Spears also took home a Moonman for Best Pop Video and the coveted Video of the Year.
She dedicated the awards to her fans, her son, and thanked God and her beautiful family.
Spears attended the award ceremony with her manager, Larry Rudolph.
Rudolph confirmed last week that the singer would not be performing at the VMAs. Her last VMA performance in 2007 for “Gimme More” brought the singer widespread ridicule for her post-baby body and lackluster lip-synching and dancing.
