Britney Spears Makes a Triumphant Return to the VMAs
8-Sep-2008

The “Piece of Me” singer won big with three Moonman awards.

Pop princess Britney had a good night at the VMAs. Prior to the ceremony, there had been much speculation on the fact that she would be opening and hosting the show with Russell Brand. Even as people found out that she would not be performing, her fans still prayed that there would not be a comeback similar to her performance of “Gimme More” at last year’s VMAs.

According to People, Spears opened the show by announcing, "I'm here tonight to celebrate a very important birthday." She continued, saying, "This is the 25th Video Music Awards—and it starts right now."

With that, Rihanna took center stage, performing her latest hit, “Disturbia,” with a dance troupe clad in leather and glowsticks. Rihanna was only one of the standout performers. The rest of the night, viewers tuned in to performances by the Jonas Brothers with “Love Bug,” Paramore, Christina Aguilera, with a techno remix of her hit, “Genie in a Bottle,” to promote her new album, and lastly, Kanye West, closing the night with an outdoor performance of an unreleased track.

In her musical history, Spears has managed to snag a total of 16 nominations in the VMAs. This year, her nominations included the biggest honor of the night, the Video of the Year award for her song, “Piece of Me.”

Moments after Rihanna finished her set, Spears returned to receive her first Moonman of the night. “Piece of Me” won the Best Female Video award. She gave a brief speech thanking God, giving a shoutout to her sons, and dedicating the award to her fans. “This is for you,” she said.

Later on, “Piece of Me” won again, this time for Best Pop Video. Spears said that she was “speechless” as she thanked her manager, Larry Rudolph, and her fans.

Finally, NBA star Kobe Bryant took the stage to announce the winner for the coveted Video of the Year award. It was Spears, of course, for “Piece of Me.” “I’m in shock,” she gushed, thanking her fans once again.

This pop star who looked nervous in the beginning before she began the show is now glowing bright with a sense of achievement.
