Hartnett sues newspaper for defamation.
Although the Internet usually has a reputation for helping to spread rumors, in Josh Hartnett’s case it may be exactly what’s needed to stop them. According to People, Hartnett is suing the British Daily Mirror newspaper after it claimed he had committed a sexual act in the library of a London hotel. Hollywire.com said Hartnett and an unnamed woman “slipped into the library at the hotel” and “closed the curtains to prevent attention.” The incident was allegedly watched via security camera by hotel staff. In a television interview, the actor called the claim “rubbish,” and reminded readers that “the paper said it was ‘rumored’ I was caught on [closed-circuit television]. But how can you have a rumor about a video? It would be on the Internet [by] now.” TMZ reported that inside sources at the hotel had revealed that Harnett does stay there sometimes, but was not staying there on the night mentioned. Hartnett made a statement through his lawyers that the remarks were “not only untrue but a complete fabrication,” in addition to being “defamatory and unsubstantiated,” the BBC reported. According to the BBC, the American actor is in London preparing to star in a West End theater production of Rain Man, in the role of Charlie Babbitt that brought Tom Cruise renown on camera.
