Iron Man to Battle Mandarin in Next Sequel
12-Sep-2008
Written by: Mike Harwood

Next villain slated for “Iron Man” sequel.

What’s the logical arch nemesis to a wealthy American eccentric technological genius in a state of the art metal exoskeleton? The answer is, of course, an Asian crime lord martial artist, with ten magical power rings.

According to MTV.com, during a meeting with the press for the upcoming DVD release of the summer hit, Iron Man, director Jon Favreau dished on the film's next installment. He said that they would attempt to tie in the Mandarin as the antagonist possibly for the next two films and perhaps may not even show his face until the third.

There were hints to the evildoer in Iron Man, as the crime syndicate who held the hero, Tony Stark, captive was named “The Ten Rings,” alluding to the source of Mandarin’s power. However, Favreau said he was having some issues tying the story lines together and finding a way to steer the villain away from his magical roots in order to fit the film’s style.

That wasn’t all Favreau had to say either. He also confirmed that Stark’s pal, James Rhodes (played by Terrence Howard), will be suiting up in the sequels as War Machine. It’s speculated that this could take place if the film wants to follow a comic story line known as “Demon in a Bottle,” which deals with Stark’s growing dependence on alcohol.

Believe it or not, that again wasn’t all Favreau had to say. He also confirmed that Tropic Thunder writer Justin Theroux will be joining the writing staff for the sequel, after the star, Robert Downey, Jr., introduced him to the director since Thunder.

Favreau also stated that he feels a team up with Captain America, Hulk, and the rest of the Avengers would be appropriate for the universe created in Iron Man, but worries about more magic based characters such as the Asgardian Norse god, Thor.

Apparently, if there’s anything else the public would like to know about the upcoming films, Favreau isn’t too tight lipped.
