Founding Member of Pink Floyd Dies
16-Sep-2008
Written by: Marissa Willman

Richard Wright, 65, lost a short battle with cancer on Monday.

Richard Wright, keyboardist and founding member of the psychedelic rock and roll band, Pink Floyd, passed away on Monday after a short battle with cancer, according to the L.A. Times.

Wright died at his home in England and his family did not wish to release any further information, Wright’s spokesman said. The musician was 65.

Wright helped pioneer Pink Floyd with his usage of the piano and synthesizer to create their distinct sound.

Wright was never a high profile member of Pink Floyd like his three bandmates, founding singer-guitarist Syd Barrett, singer-bassist Roger Waters and singer-guitarist David Gilmour, who replaced Barrett after his departure from the band in 1968.

Wright left Pink Floyd in 1980 after a tour promoting their double album, The Wall, because of growing tensions within the band.

The Wall spent 15 weeks at the No. 1 spot and is the third best-selling album of all time.

"I know we've made some great songs and great music," Wright told Billboard last year, "but I can't tell you why we're so popular."

Barrett succumbed to mental illness that was attributed to his drug use. He passed away in 2006. Waters continues to play a show called “Dark Side of the Moon” under his own name and without any other members of Pink Floyd.
